About Stodhart Tunnel
Cultural, Urban Environment, Interesting Places, Squares
Stodhart Tunnel is a 100-yard (91 m) tunnel on the Peak Forest Tramway at Chapel Milton, Derbyshire. Until May 2013, it was considered to be the earliest rail-related tunnel in the world, but is now believed to be pre-dated by Fritchley Tunnel on the Butterley Gangroad at Fritchley, also in Derbyshire. One portal was destroyed by a road re-alignment in 1949, but the other survives. It is Grade II* listed and on the Buildings at Risk Register. From the 1950s part of the tunnel and about 1⁄2 mi (0.80 km) of track was tar sealed and used to test Ferodo brakes. The tunnel was used to test the effect of humidity on brakes.
